R1 questions

Can I buy the R1 on the bike to work scheme?
Yes. The scheme covers €1,500 towards an e-bike, so on a €1,799 R1 you pay the €299 balance yourself and the rest comes out of gross salary — a saving of up to 52% on the covered portion.

How far will the R1 really go on a charge?
Up to 100km is measured on assist level 1 at a steady pace on flat ground. On a hilly commute, on higher assist, in winter, plan for roughly half that. Tell us your route in store and we'll give you a straight figure for it.

Will the R1 handle hills?
Its 35Nm front hub motor is comfortable on everyday city gradients and will climb up to about 25 degrees. If your route has steep or repeated climbs, the mid-drive M1 (80Nm) or X0 (90Nm) is the better bike — see the hybrid comparison.

How much maintenance does it need?
Very little. The Gates carbon belt is rated for over 30,000km and never needs oiling, and the Shimano Nexus 3-speed hub is sealed, so there's no derailleur to adjust. First service within 6 weeks or 300km, then annually.

Which size should I pick?
Medium (54cm) suits riders 167–182cm, Large (58cm) suits 175–210cm. If you're between the two, come and ride both.

Can I test ride one?
Yes, at Clonskeagh, Rathgar (Bear Cycles), Cork and Galway. Book a test ride. More answers on our e-bike FAQs page.

FAQ

Is the R1 good for hills?

It handles moderate hills well and is rated for gradients up to 25 degrees at average rider weight. Its front hub motor gives a gentler push than a mid-drive, so if your commute has long or steep climbs every day, look at the M1.

How far will the R1 go on one charge?

Up to 100km on assist level 1 and even terrain. Expect less on higher assist or hilly routes. The battery comes out for charging indoors, and a full charge takes 2.5–3.5 hours.

What's the difference between the R1 and the M1?

The R1 is lighter (21kg vs 23kg) and €1,200 cheaper, with a front hub motor and 3-speed hub. The M1 has an 80Nm mid-drive and Enviolo stepless gearing for hills and longer distances.

Is there a low-step version?

The S2 uses the same front hub motor and 504Wh battery in a low-step frame.

What size R1 do I need?

Medium (54cm) suits riders 167–182cm and Large (58cm) suits 175–210cm. In the overlap, book a test ride and try both. Maximum total weight is 115kg, including rider and luggage.

Can I buy it through the bike to work scheme?

Yes. Your employer can contribute up to €1,500 towards an e-bike, repaid from your gross salary over up to 12 months. You pay any balance above €1,500 directly. Get a bike to work quote.
