Carrick Little to Tullymore Forest Loop | Route Guide

The Carrick Little to Tullymore Forest loop is one of our favourite loops so far. It contains the perfect blend of coastal views, forest trails and country roads. It is a longer route, most suited to day trippers. The route starts at Carrick Little, a parking spot and includes several notable waypoints such as Bloody Bridge, Newcastle Harbour, Tollymore Forest Park, Ben Crom Dam, and ends at the Silent Valley Reservoir. There are plenty of places to stop for a coffee and loads of viewpoints that make perfect picnic stops. This route features mostly paved surfaces and is suitable for all skill levels.

We kicked off at Carrick Little carpark, an elevated site and began a gentle descend to Bloody Bridge. Despite its name, the bridge is a picturesque spot located on the fringe of the Mourne Mountains, by the Irish Sea. This spot is popular amongst boulders and campers.

We cycled alongside the coast, taking in the views until we could see Newcastle. We popped into Olive Bizarre, a local café for delicious lunch and coffee. This place is worth the stop, if not for the food than for the gnome themed loo.

Further into Newscastle village there is tonnes on offer – amusements, shopping and the warm sea pool. We came through the town and followed in the direction of the forest loop. Plenty of beautiful places to stop here for a picnic – many were.

The forest is a serene place, lush green trees line paved roads which make for a lovely recreational cycle.

Back on track, we followed quiet country roads to Silent Valley Reservoir. Another quiet location, and a place to rest. Follow the roads again (but do stop for farm fresh eggs) and you will arrive once again at Carrick Little. This route is truly tranquil, the perfect antidote to a busy week.

STOPS

Carrick Little

The parking area is a known spot located at the base of the Mourne Mountains. There are plenty of spaces, and fantastic views of the peaks of the mountains.

Bloody Bridge

This bridge gets its horrific name from an 18th-century massacre. We don’t need to go into detail. Today it’s a serene spot where the Bloody Bridge River flows into the Irish Sea. The bridge marks the transition from mountain to coastal scenery, offering stunning views across the sea as you continue along the coastal path.

Newcastle Harbour

Known for its charming mix of fishing boats and leisure vessels, Newcastle Harbour is a great place to stop and catch your breath. Take in the views of the Mourne Mountains sweeping down to the coast, and if time allows, wander through Newcastle’s charming streets with numerous options, for a quick bite or a cup of coffee. Check out the warm sea baths, amusements and array of craft shops.

Tollymore Forest Park

A gem of natural beauty, Tollymore Forest Park is known for its atmospheric woodlands and rivers. You’ll cycle through a series of forest trails, crossing stone bridges and catching glimpses of its famous Game of Thrones filming locations. The park’s variety of tree species creates a mix of light and shadow, making it a magical spot for a picnic.

The Ben Crom Dam

The Ben Crom Dam is nestled amidst the Mourne Mountains scenery, with views of the reservoir and the peaks nearby. A truly awe inspiring place to stop and appreciate the soothing sounds of flowing water and the unfiltered beauty of nature.

Silent Valley Reservoir

The reservoir is a great spot to lock up the bikes and explore by foot.  It boasts fantastic walking trails and is a feat of engineering whilst in keeping with the beauty of its surrounds.

Back to Carrick Little

In total this route is just over 42km. It is a long one but we found the quiet spaces and clear roads provided great peace. If you’d like to adapt the journey and make it shorter, we’d recommend bypassing The Ben Crom Dam.
